The EU is a political, social and economic project. In this last aspect, we have been seeing very timid progress towards fiscal union for years. The Belgian Presidency of the Council, from January 1 to June 30, has among its priorities the improvement of the economic competitiveness of the European Union.
In this sense we ask ourselves: could fiscal union help us in this area? Is it really possible to create a fiscal union that fits all the countries of the Union? Or is it simply a utopia that is not materially possible? What role does the attempt to enlarge the Union play?
We have talked about all these topics and more with the following speakers:
• Carlos Martínez Montgay former head of the Directorate General of Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission.
• Josep Oliver Alonso, Emeritus Professor of Applied Economics at the UAB;
Taking advantage of the theme of the episode, we have taken the opportunity to recommend two books in collaboration with the Nollegiu bookstore:
• A dystopian world: Globalization, inequality, technology, climate, immigration and aging, Josep Oliver.
• Rewriting the rules of the European economy: proposals for growth and shared prosperity, Joseph Stigliz.
