Europe's role in the world has changed. Chronicle of Café Europa with Pol Morillas

The Café Europa, held on September 20, opened the course with an analysis of international politics, focusing on the role that the European Union can play in the face of various global challenges.

The event, moderated by journalist Àngel Pons, featured the participation of Pol Morillas, director of CIDOB, who offered an overview of the most relevant issues that will mark the international agenda in the coming months.

Morillas stressed that tensions between powers, such as the United States and China, as well as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, will be key to understanding global politics. Regarding the Middle East, specifically, he expressed that "we remain among the headlines that talk about the risk of escalation of the conflict and the reality, which shows us a will for containment on the part of all parties," highlighting the importance of observing how these dynamics affect Europe.

The objective of the session was to identify the conflicts and challenges that will mark the international panorama, with special mention to the presidential elections in the United States. Morillas warned that a Trump victory could have significant repercussions for Latin countries and for Israel, but that his "erratic" attitude towards international relations makes it difficult to predict what his position will be. On the other hand, a victory for Harris would mean continued international relations and a delicate balance with Netanyahu.

Another key point was the impact of the far right on the international politics of the EU. Morillas stated that "the influence of the extreme right in the EU is above all through the European Council," and raised doubts regarding the real influence on European international politics.

Furthermore, Morillas recalled that Europe has depended for decades on the peace sustained by the United States, concluding that "we must think in terms of coordination and European integration, even beyond spending."

At the end of the session, Dolors Camats asked Àngel Pons two questions about the power of large companies like X, private media and fake news, as well as the responsibility of public media in the fight against disinformation.

We want to thank all attendees for their commitment to this debate for understanding the European and global political future.
