The Mediterranean of Cities
Annual Conference Legado Pasqual Maragall 2025
Thursday, November 27, 7:00 PM – RBA Auditorium (Av. Diagonal, 189)
The annual conference of the Catalunya Europa Foundation is the premier meeting for all individuals and organizations that share and promote the legacy of Pasqual Maragall. It is a gathering point for collaboration, idea renewal, and continued work toward a more just, open, and deeply European society.
This year, under the title The Mediterranean of Cities, and 30 years after Barcelona spearheaded the Euro-Mediterranean dialogue, the event will focus on two of Maragall’s most vibrant and universal ideas: the Mediterranean as a space for cooperation and cities as key actors in international politics.
In 1995, Barcelona hosted the Conference of Mediterranean Cities, initiated by Maragall, which preceded the Euro-Mediterranean Summit of Heads of State and Government and led to the Barcelona Process. Thirty years later, in a world marked by climate crises, inequalities, old conflicts, and new authoritarianisms, we revisit that spirit to ask: what remains of the Euro-Mediterranean project? What role can cities play today in restoring hope, peace, and cooperation across the two shores?
Cities are once again emerging as actors with their own voice, laboratories where global challenges and local solutions coexist. We will discuss this with the speakers of this year’s conference, inviting reflection on the present and future of the Euro-Mediterranean dialogue.
