Four 30-minute episodes in which one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century is addressed: the energy transition in urban areas

Premiere #FuturoUrbano, the new docu-serie from the Filmin foundation

The Catalunya Europa Foundation launches a new documentary series titled "Urban Future. Challenges and solutions for the energy transition in cities". This production, which consists of four episodes of 30 minutes each, addresses one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century: the energy transition in urban areas.

Synopsis

In a world in which cities occupy only 2% of the planet's surface but concentrate more than half of the world's population and are responsible for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, the documentary series "Urban Future" explores how urban areas can mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce their ecological footprint without increasing social inequalities.

The series breaks down the key principles for a sustainable energy transition: increasing energy efficiency, the shift towards renewable energy and the proximity between the areas of energy generation and consumption. Furthermore, it does not hide the difficulties of this process, highlighting the geopolitical, economic and urban obstacles related to land use, social equity, available resources and governance.

Mission

The objective of this series is to demonstrate that the apparent dilemma between environmental efficiency and social equity is a false dilemma. The series argues that only an equitable distribution of costs will allow a politically and socially viable transition, avoiding the increase in inequalities.

The series is aimed at society in general and, in particular, at public managers, business leaders and third sector entities working in the field of energy transition, urban decarbonization and social inequalities. And with the objective of disseminating knowledge of the need, potential and social impact of the energy transition in European urban areas and, especially, in the cities of our country.

Format

Each chapter deals with a specific topic of the energy transition, through an introductory presentation by an expert lasting 15-20 minutes, and a subsequent one-hour dialogue with 4 panelists, representatives of the public, private and academic sectors. and third sector. In addition, for each chapter, an interview has been recorded with the expert who acts as the speaker, and another with Oriol Nel·lo, academic coordinator and moderator of the sessions.

The series of debates was recorded in the Macaya Room of the CaixaForum Macaya (Paseo de San Juan, 108, Barcelona), on November 8 and 23, 2022 and February 7 and 21, 2023.

The series features contributions from renowned experts such as Oriol Nel·lo Colom, Víctor Marcos Morell, Carlos Riba Romeva, Joan López Redondo and Marta Morera Marcé, among others, who offer a comprehensive and critical vision of the steps necessary to build a more sustainable and fair world.
